PROFILE
District Ganderbal is situated towards the Northern side of the District Srinagar. It is an important District with respect to Agriculture sector as 80% of the population is engaged with farming activity. Average altitude is 1650 mts. above sea level . The District comprises of 4 administrative bocks viz; Ganderbal, Wakura, Lar and Kangan. However, it has been divided into 2 Sub-Divisions by Agriculture Production Department such as, Ganderbal and Kangan. These sub-divisions have been further divided into 15 Agri.Zones with 75 Circles. Each circle comprises of 4-5 villages and is headed by one Jr.Agri.Asstt.(JAA) while as each Zone comprising of 6-8 circles is headed by Agriculture Extension Officer and the two Sub-Divisions are headed by two Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer viz; SDAO Ganderbal and SDAO Kangan . Besides, the services of 4 Subject Matter Specialists 2 in each Sub-Division are available to assist the SDAO for launching Technical Programmes.

The total cultivable area available for cultivation of Major Crops is 17315 Hectares out of which 10030 Hectares is irrigated and 7285 is un-irrigated. Paddy and Maize is grown over an area of about 9103 and 4273 Hectares respectively. Pulses are grown over an area of 1192 Hectares during Kharief and 1200 Hectares in winter while as 6908 hectares are covered under summer and winter fodders. At present the total population as per latest census is more than 2 lacs and the production is about 43 thousand metric tones. The increase in production is due to the latest technology adopted by the farming community which is disseminated by Agriculture Department.

High lights of proposed District Plan under Agriculture Sector for the year 2009-10
Seventy Five Nos. of Spray pumps shall be distributed on 33% ,subsidy out of which 29 shall be distributed in Ganderbal Constituency and 46 in Kangan Constituency.
Seed bins of 2 qtl. capacity for seed storage shall be distributed on 33% subsidy 29 in Gbl. constituency and 46 in Kangan Constituency.
Since the Ganderbal District is newly created, 10 departmental offices under Agriculture Sector shall be strengthened to facilitate the farmers. 5 Nos. in Ganderbal constituency and 5 Nos. of Kangan Constituency.
Pesticides for seed treatment and to overcome the paddy blast shall be distributed on 90% subsidy to the farmers. A quantity of 43 kgs. shall be put at the disposal of Ganderbal constituency and 69 kgs. for Kangan constituency. The pesticide shall cover 750 ha. of land.
580 kgs. of hybrid/HYV maize shall be distributed among the farmers of the district on 90% subsidy. An area of about 75 hectts. shall be covered with 29 hectts. from Ganderbal and 46 hectts. from Kangan.
A quantity of 17.40 qtls. of Chemical Fertilizer shall be distributed in Ganderbal Constituency and 45 qtls. in Kangan Constituency on 90% subsidy to boost the maize crop.
Oilseeds HYV shall be distributed on 90% subsidy to cover an area of 66.7 hectts. in Ganderbal Constituency and 105.8 heccts. from Kangan constituency.
High yielding varieties of Peas 15 qtls shall be distributed on 90% subsidy. An area of 18.75 hectts. shall be covered in the Distt. Out of which 7.25 hectts. in Ganderbal Constituency and 11.5 hectts. in Kangan Constituency.
In order to introduce the Mushroom cultivation in Distt. Ganderbal, 2 demonstration programmes with 23 no. of trays at Ganderbal and 37 no. of trays at Kangan shall be laid and 100 nos. of un-employed youth shall be trained to adopt the Mushroom cultivation for self employment.
The District has a very good potential for Honey Production. In this regard a training programme shall be organized at Kangan to un-employed youth so that they could adop the Apiculture for their self employment. About 50 no. of bee hives along with bee colonies shall be distributed on 50% subsidy to the trained youth.
Under Agri. Land sector, land development on 33% subsidy on individual basis shall be done which will cover an area of 04 hectts. in the district out of which 01 hectt. shall be covered at Ganderbal and 03 hectts. at Kangan.
Gully Stabilization with the construction of retaining walls and protection bunds shall be done which can save an area of 40 hectts. from soil erosion with 10 hectts. from Ganderbal Constituency and 30 hectts. from Kangan Constituency.
